Medicina y Salud Pública: su difusión a través de la Gaceta de Guatemala (1797-1804)

Resumen:
El artículo trata sobre el desarrollo y difusión de la medicina y la salud pública en Guatemala durante los años de 1797 a 1804. En este estudio se tomará como eje central los artículos y escritos publicados en el impreso titulado Gaceta de Guatemala, por ser un referente de la problemática médica y sanitaria que durante la época de estudio se vivía en Guatemala con motivo de los brotes de viruela y otras enfermedades contagiosas como la lepra, calenturas y fiebres, así como por mordeduras de animales e insectos ponzoñosos que ocasionaron mortandad y deterioro de la salud entre la población a finales del siglo XVIII. En este sentido, nos centraremos específicamente en el debate, propuestas y proyectos elaborados por el grupo de letrados que colaboraban en la Gaceta de Guatemala, quienes a través de la puesta en común de sus conocimientos implementaron medidas de control, así como diversos métodos para contrarrestar los efectos de las enfermedades.

Abstract:
Medicine and Public Health: its diffusion through the Gazette of Guatemala (1797-1804)
The article discusses the development and dissemination of medicine and public health in Guatemala during the years 1797 to 1804. This study takes as its central theme the papers published in the paper entitled: Gaceta de Guatemala, as a reference for medical and health problems during the period under study, in a context of smallpox outbreaks and other communicable diseases like leprosy, fevers and fevers, as well as bites from poisonous animals and insects, causing death and ill health among the population in the late eighteenth century. In this sense, we will focus specifically on the debate, proposals and projects developed by the group of scholars who collaborated in the Gazette of Guatemala who, through the sharing of knowledge, implemented control measures and various methods to counter the effects of disease.
